In this first Chapter it talked a lot about overall wellness. Which I am sure not a lot of people are familiar with. People associate Health with how good your physique looks and how healthy you eat. Its misleading because as they are both a necessary part of being healthy there is so much more. Donatelle states that there is a new definition of health which is “Health is the state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing, not just the absence of disease or infirmity”.(Chapter 1,p.2). The reason I am talking about this is due to the fact that they all work hand and hand with one another. My journey is a mix between them all. Without incorporating all these into my daily life I won’t achieve what I want.
Making these healthy changes is about adaptation and the want to grow and become better. The chapter does a great job at breaking down steps in an order that will be best for overall growth in your own health and wellness. The step that I find to be most important is the action step which is due to the other steps are essential and you need them to prepare for taking action. But time and time again I have heard people who struggle with either gaining or losing weight talk about how they will start next week or tomorrow. Which is setting yourself up for failure it puts you in a downward spiral that is hard to get out of. That is why taking action is so important because if you don’t your stuck in the same spot you were when you started to visualize the health goal and start the preparation step. A great way to counteract yourself from not starting or failing victim of stopping shortly after you do start is to surround yourself with people who have the same goals and aspirations as you do. As stated in Chapter 1 “Sometimes, the right setting or the right group of people will positively influence your behaviors”(Donatelle, 2019, p.20).
With reading this first chapter I have learned a lot of helpful information that I can include into my health guide. So far my goal is off to a great start. With tracking your calories you really get a grasp of how much your body is consuming on a day to day basis, especially with mine being so high. I have purchased a scale in which makes it a lot easier to track meals throughout the day. The thing I have found to be most beneficial is being constant with the time frame and the meals you consume on a day to day basis. This chapter relates to me a lot due to me having a training partner who is on the same journey I am. The thing that helped me most this chapter is integrated the short-term goals. It really gives you an aspect of achievement and makes you want to work harder. The picture I attached shows my weigh in which means I am up almost 2lbs which is great and on the right track. I also threw in a picture of me weighing out some of my food for one meal so you can get a visual aspect of how easy it is to weigh out food and throw it in my fitness pal for quick and easy macronutrients.
